In April 2016 I travelled to the small island of La Palma with renowed photographer Rafael Rojas and his wife Anca, as part of a tour. I have admired Rafael’s work for some time and having the opportunity to see how he worked – not to mention getting his feedback on my images – was a wonderful experience.
Having never been to any of the Canary Islands before I didn’t really know what to expect but, with promises of black volcanic beaches, mountains floating in the clouds, sub-tropical rainforests and night skies beyond imagination I couldn’t fail to be intrigued. I packed my bags with a huge amount of excitement.
And wow, what a place! La Palma certainly didn’t disappoint. With such a huge diversity of landscapes to choose from, there seemed to be photographic opportunities at every corner. La Palma really is like a miniature continent squeezed into just over 700 sq kilometres. A week definitely doesn’t do this island justice. With some truly inspiring teaching from Rafael, I returned with a batch of images that I am really pleased with. I can’t wait to go back there!
